text 6 Feb Does God sustain creation?

I have often heard that God has a plan for my life and that He has a will for us to follow. Have you ever thought about God’s role in our day to day lives? I would like to try and tackle this subject in this post. Please feel free to share your thoughts on the matter below!

I have heard many different viewpoints on God’s involvement in creation but

in this post I want to look into what scripture says.

We know that God is the author of creation (Genesis 1-2) but to what extent is God still involved in His creation? Psalm 147:8-9 (ESV) says “He covers the heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for the earth; he makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, and to the young ravens that cry” Consider the following verses and see what the Bible says about God sustaining creation.

“He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the air nest by the waters; they sing among the branches. He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the earth is satisfied by the fruit of his work. He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate-bringing forth food from the earth.” (Psalm 104:10-14)

“You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. The grasslands of the desert overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.” (Psalm 65:9-13)

“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1:3)

“In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:10)

“Ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:7-10)

“Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds.” (Psalm 148:7-10)

Paul addresses the men of Athens in Acts chapter seventeen about their idol worship. He speaks of God sustaining human life. Verse 25 says “…since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. and in Verse 28 he says “for “In him we live and move and have our being…”.  Paul seemed to understand God’s unique role in creation in that God did not just create and leave, He has an active role in every aspect of creation.

That is just a sampling of scripture showing that God is in active control of creation. We can rest soundly knowing that the creator of the universe is also the sustainer of the universe!

Peace and Love!
